Comparison Guide to the Delonghi EC680 vs EC685

The De’Longhi Dedica Cappuccino EC680 and EC685 machines are very popular for a reason. We are going to examine what makes these a manual system, what is good and bad about manual, or lever systems.

We will also tell you abit about De’Longhi and what makes them a trustworthy name in espresso and cappuccino systems. Finally we will compare the two systems and provide some links to get the a good value on them.

About De’Longhi

Delonghi is technically headed by Giuseppe De’Longhi who serves as President but his son Fabio De’Longhi holds the title of chief executive officer. Giuseppe De’Longhi has built a fortune worth an estimated $3.6B USD. In 2001 De’Longhi purchased Kenwood which gave them access to Chinese manufacturing and many if its products are now imported from its factory there.

Choosing a lever espresso machine

Manual espresso machines like the Dedica lines are often called lever espresso machines. You may consider the difference a little like the difference between automatic and manual transmission cars.

The automatic technology started off decades ago and arguably had a rocky start. But that has long been resolved and automated versions work great now. You get more consistent and reliable performance with the automatic versions of both. But both coffee and driving enthusiasts will often swear you get better performance through the manual varieties.

Frankly, this is debatable. But much like a high-performance sports car, your daily espresso is at least part experience. Imagine you could make a machine that masked the odors coming from your daily brew. Gasp! How horrible.

The Dedica system is not completely manual. It doesn’t have a lever you press down to force the water through the beans but it is manual in the sense that you turn an arm to access the coffee grind basket and then secure it back.

For most people this gives them some involvement in the process and is more fun than just dumping beans and water in the machine and pressing a button. The adjustable frother allows you to adjust the foam and steam levels to your preferences.

There is a lot more than the quality of a cup of coffee that explains the cost of the espresso machine. Things from features, finish, brand etc play a big part. De’Longhi Dedica line is considered a better than average line with good design and solid manufacturing and quality control.

De’Longhi Introduces the EC685

When Delonghi introduced the new EC685 line of Dedica manual cappuccino machines to replace the Dedica EC680 you could be forgiven for missing the differences. They kept the general style and design which means they look nearly identical in pictures. But when you put them side by side you can spot some differences.

The EC680 model is 6.75 x 13 x 13.0 inches and weighs 9.5 lbs. They made the EC685 Deluxe model slightly smaller, sleeker and lighter. It measures 5.9 x 12 x 12 inches and weighs a little less at 8.8 lbs.

Both are highly rated, well regarded classics and both are worthy of your dollars. Both have the same pros and cons vs other types of espresso and cappuccino machines. They are attractive, mid-priced systems. You can spend a lot more or a lot less but with this one you get excellent coffee and something that is nice to look at.

This class of machine is not a super premium line and is meant for normal household or maybe small business use. A coffee shop wouldn’t buy one. Commercial and luxury models are expected to be more durable and easier to maintain and service. By the time the Delonghi Dedica’s break their support probably assume you just want to buy a newer model any way.

EC680 vs EC685 Specifications

Like the EC680 line, the EC685 is a sleek, narrow design that looks good and won’t waste counter space. The EC680 are 13 x 5.9 x 12. The Delonghi  Dedica EC680 15-bar pump espresso & cappuccino machine is a well-tested and successful product. It has strong reviews and is sold worldwide.

Both systems heat quickly with its “Thermoblock” system warming the water in about 40 seconds. The Dedica is a 15-bar pump espresso machine. This refers to a system for standardizing the pressure and delivers more reliable quality than truly manual espresso machines that allow the barista to control the pressure.

It is self-priming. The cappuccino system is adjustable so you can heat or froth milk or water for teas or infusions. Both are 1300 watt pump driven machines. 13 x 5.9 x 12

Buy the Delonghi EC680 or the EC685?

The EC685 is meant to replace the EC680 not be sold side-by-side. The EC685 line comes at a higher suggested retail price than the Delonghi EC860 Dedica espresso and cappuccino machine line did.

I don’t think I can argue the extra cost is necessarily worth it so if value matters to you then buy the 680. My guess is we may see the last of the EC680s available new in 2020.
