2020 JURA J90 IMPRESSA Review Summary
Our updated 2020 JURA J90 IMPRESSA Review includes a strong buy recommendation with some caveats. Available direct from JURA for less than $2000, the J90 offers JURA’s world class design, engineering and construction at significantly less investment than the GIGA 6 or the really great JURA Z8 or the more economical but equally great JURA E8.
Founded in 1931, JURA Elektroapparate AG is based in Niederbuchsiten which his in the Swiss Canton of Solothurn. JURA’s products live up to the Swiss reputation for engineering excellence, quality and craftsmanship.
JURA is currently best known for its fully automatic espresso machines. This core area originated in the early 1980s and is nowadays a main element of the brand image as well as creating most of its sales. A strong focus is laid on design and there are no low-budget machines.
However, like other firms that focus on design and engineering like Apple or NIKE, JURA does not own their own manufacturing. The espresso machines are produced by Eugster/Frismag in Romanshorn, which also manufactures machines for other brands such as Siemens, Bosch and AEG.
JURA J90 IMPRESSA Review
All the benefits of commercial grade automatic brewing
The JURA J90 IMPRESSA is one of JURA Elektroapparate AG’s best automatic one-touch coffee machines. With a single touch of the button you can get consistently top quality drinks with five different programmable coffee strength levels and dual programmable temperature levels that will produce espresso drinks from ristretto to latte macchiato using their distinctive Rotary Switch control.
The J90 is one of 11 products in the J line and it among the top rated in its class. It has a very simple setup and is beautifully designed and crafted but with a few design quirks.
It has a nice double spout for doppio shots, a great digital display and a distinctive rotary-style switch that allows you to scroll through the options.
The J90 has an awkward tube you place into a cup of milk instead of a milk reservoir. Some people prefer this as it does reduce cleaning. The milk nozzle also dispenses the coffee for milk based espresso drinks. It also has an automated, delayed cleaning cycle.
JURA J90 IMPRESSA Review: Brewing Features and Quality
JURA J90 Brewing Technology
You almost can’t cause this to brew bad quality drinks. It sports their Intelligence Pre-Brew Aroma System (I.P.B.A.S.), their Aroma+ grinder which grinds twice as fast to preserve aroma and the Thermoblock heating system.
The “P” button allows you to program and customize the brew settings. The J90 has five different programmable coffee strength settings and dual coffee brewing temperature settings.
An Aroma+ grinder grinds the beans at twice the speed without impairing the aroma and the revolutionary fine foam technology places a light-as-air milk foam crown on every latte macchiato or cappuccino.
The J90 boasts some of the best microfoam technology available from JURA and is among the best quality available in the market. You will always get the precise control over your foam needed to make drinks so good you may not want to go to your barista any more. The J90 can produce some of the softest and silkiest foam in a home machine.
JURA J90 IMPRESSA Review: Maintenance and cleaning
For a complex machine the J90 is relatively easy to keep clean and maintenance is on par with comparable models. The J90 sports an integrated rinsing, cleaning and descaling program. Their JURA hygiene system and CLEARYL Blue filter cartridges.
One odd design issue is you need to move up the espresso nozzles to remove the tray of grounds.
