DeLonghi EC702

DeLonghi EC702

  • Stainless Steel Boiler
  • Dual Thermostats
  • Excellent Brewing and Milk Frothing

  • Older Design

The DeLonghi EC702 is probably not on your list of espresso makers. But it should be because it offers amazing value and a refined, well tested design. Our EC702 review discovered that this os one of the cheapest models of espresso makers that has both a stainless-steel boiler and dual thermostats.

As a result, it can make extremely consistent, high quality espresso and also steam and froth milk at the right temperature for both and with almost no waiting.

This DeLonghi has very good, manual milk frothing and steaming. As it has aged, it has become an even greater value and the core brewing systems usually appear only in much more expensive machines.

As an older model, it is hard to know when DeLonghi will retire the EC702. So, you should consider buying an EC702 while they are still available. Our DeLonghi EC702 review recommends it, for this price range.

DeLonghi EC702 Brewing Technology

The EC702 is an old model and it has no flash and glam behind it. But, for less than $200 it makes better espresso and milk-based espresso drinks like cappuccinos and lattes than machines that are three or four times as expensive.

Basically, everything on this model works really well. It is pump-driven with 15 bars of pressure and it automatically self-primes so there is little to no wait. The 44-ounce removable water tank is larger than many other models in its class including the EC680.

The EC702 Dual Thermostat Advantage

Espresso and Milk Steam Need Different Temperatures

What sets the DeLonghi EC702 apart is the boiler and dual thermostats. It is surprising when a machine in this price range has an actual stainless-steel boiler instead of a Thermoblock or other fast-heating element.

Most espresso machines, especially less expensive ones have a single thermostat. So, the water for brewing and the water and steam for are always the same temperature. Water should be between 91 degrees to 96 degrees Celsius (195 to 205 degrees Fahrenheit) for espresso. Steam for dairy and other milks is typically between 86 °C and 95 °C. (187 to 203 degrees Fahrenheit). So, depending upon the beans you choose, the way you like your milk, the type of milk these temperatures should be very different.

The DeLonghi EC702 has two separate thermostats, which allow for water and steam pressure to be controlled separately. This allows you to adjust them separately and makes a huge difference in

The Rapid Cappuccino System maintains the optimal temperature so you can brew cup after cup instantly with minimal wait.

The DeLonghi EC702 will brew ground espresso or E.S.E (Easy Serving Espresso) pods with their unique, patented dual-filter holder. Their ‘Sempre Crema Filter’ helps to enrich the brewing process leading to really excellent espresso crema.

Milk Steaming and Frothing

Manual milk frothing and steaming is prone to error and takes some practice to get right. It is one of the reasons we often recommend one people consider a super automatic espresso maker instead.

The DeLonghi EC702 has two separate thermostats that control water and steam pressure. It comes with a patented cappuccino frother that makes it a lot easier to get consistent, delicious froth. Their frother includes a special chamber which mixes the steam and milk, creating an excellent froth.

Cleanup and Maintenance

An often overlooked facet of espresso maker reviews is cleaning and maintenance. Our DeLonghi EC702 review places a high emphasis on this. DeLonghi EC702 review. DeLonghi has excellent design and that leads to machines that are relatively easy to clean. It has an excellent, no-drip design that virtually eliminates drips. The water tank is removable, and most parts are dishwasher safe. Be careful about placing a coffee or espresso maker the water could freeze because if can (may…. will) damage your machine. Remember, dirty machines make bad beverages and, if you machine is hard to clean and maintain, you won’t enjoy using it.

DeLonghi EC702 Review

We strongly recommend the DeLonghi EC702 if you are looking for a low priced, manual machine. Its hard to understand why they would build such great features into a sub-$200 espresso maker but leave them out of machines that cost several time more like the ECAM22110SB. For the price, the EC702 has outstanding brewing and milk steaming and frothing with great design. Our De’Longhi EC702 Review for 2020 concludes that this is a surprisingly strong offering, while it lasts.
