Solid Brewing for Its Class

This Breville BES810BSS Duo Temp Pro review considered not just the machine itself but whether this class is right for more people.

The BES810BSS is an entry level espresso machine that works well for new espresso fans and occasional use. It scored OK but was outscored in the under $600 class by both Breville and DeLonghi models in our comparison buyers guide.

It is a good value and simple to use but produces very high-quality espresso. Although better known for the Breville coffee maker line, we have found their espresso brewing to be very strong too. We find it to be a better value than the Breville Bambino Plus BES500BSS.

The BES810BSS is well designed with a few caveats that we will discuss below and high-quality construction.

Cons of Manual Machines

Machines of this type are very manual. Most people work about 200 days a year. So, a single $6 drink at Starbucks each workday is $1200. So, if all the extra work and grinding and storage and cleanup is going to reduce how often you make espresso then consider something with more automated features.

For a couple of hundred extra dollars you can enjoy the benefits of an Italian made, super-automatic. You will pay a lot more for the machine, but you may get a lot of use out of it and save in the long run.

Solid Brewing Tech

The Duo Temp gets the two most important elements of espresso brewing right. They have great control over the pressure and temperature of the steam. For that reason, it can produce excellent quality espresso but is better for occasional use than regular or heavy uses. If you wanted to make espresso for a group, you would have a lot of people waiting their turn.

The overall design is good but not excellent. The dial control is nice and easy to use. The 61-ounce water reservoir is rear mounted which is more clumsy to reach and change than side or front mounted ones. Also, the metal filter basket has a dual wall design which allows residue and grounds to get trapped between the two walls. This means extra cleaning or the buildup of dried grounds will clog the machine eventually.

Other Recommendations

For higher rated recommendations look at the DELONGHI ESAM3300 and the Breville Barista Express in our Breville vs. DeLonghi comparison.

Breville BES810BSS Accessories That Ship With The New Machine

The machine ships with a Razor dose trimming tool, 1 and 2 cup dual wall filter baskets, stainless steel milk container and water filter and water filter holder. Also, the accessories store easily which makes it convenient and reduces clutter in your kitchen.

Overall Good Value

Although it is a good value, at this level you are giving up a lot of features that can be found in more expensive semi-automatic or fully automatic machines. Manual coffee making and all the cleaning and prep required also can lead to more human error.

The machine doesn’t automatically control the temperature of the milk which will mean lower quality foam. It doesn’t have a built in grinder so you need a stand alone coffee grinder and that means more steps. Also, some machines can heat up as quickly as three seconds and this one will have you waiting a bit.

About Breville

Breville is an Australian brand of small home appliances, founded in Sydney in 1932. It is best known for its home appliances, specifically blenders, coffee makers, toasters, kettles, microwaves and toaster ovens. Although they do make products that are popular in small commercial kitchens they are best known for entry level and moderately priced machines. They also manufactures the Inissia, Bambino and Citiz machines for Nespresso.

Brewing Features

The Duo Temp Pro has an Italian-made pump and pre-infusion features. It starts with low, 9 bars pressure to bloom coffee grounds and then increase up to 15 bars of pressure for full extraction.

Duo Temp Pro features a PID controller (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) to more consistently control water temperature than simple mechanical thermostat. is simple to use for first time espresso machine owners.

It also does have an auto-purge feature so the machine will quickly lower its temperature after use This means that you get consistent quality when you make more than one shot.

The BES810BSS comes with one and two cup filter baskets which means you can extract one or two espresso shots at a time. The machine gives you have manual control of espresso shot volume. Some people like this but we consider that bad for overall quality and consistency.

Automatically purging the heat system after steaming ensures your next espresso is extracted at the right temperature.

Grinding

The BES810BSS does not have a built-in grinder. This doesn’t just mean that you need to buy a separate grinder. It also affects how you use it. So, see my comment in the review section about the cost of a daily Starbucks vs. an automated machine with a built in grinder.

The beans need to be stored somewhere and added to the grinder. As a result, you must match the grain of the ground espresso to your drink and manually grind the beans.

After grinding you need to scoop the grounds into the machine. After you are done you need to clean everything out manually. This reduced the score on the Breville BES810BSS Duo Temp Pro review.

Microfoam

The BES810 has a steam wand for steaming and frothing milk and a high power 1600W element. So, this delivers sufficient steam to create micro-foam as long as your technique is up to the challenge.

Maintenance & Cleaning

Fundamentally, one of the main drawbacks of skipping any machine in the same class as the BES810 is the amount of manual effort involved. Think about how often you would really like to have espresso at home and it if more than a couple of times a week then consider moving up to more features.

The filter basket has a dual wall design which allows residue and grounds to get trapped between the walls. This means extra cleaning or the buildup of dried grounds will clog the machine eventually The Breville BES810 Duo Temp has cleaning and drip tray does provide alerts to remind you to clean up.

Finally, to sum up our Breville BES810BSS Duo Temp Pro review, for its class, the BES810 is well designed but not our first choice.
