DeLonghi Espresso Review 2020

For decades, DeLonghi espresso has been one of the best espressos available to the home barista. But you shouldn’t have to spend thousands to own a DeLonghi espresso machine and get rich crema and velvety microfoam milk. So, to help get your home brewed latte fix on a budget, we ranked the three best DeLonghi espresso makers under $200.

This is actually a three-part DeLonghi espresso machine review. We found some excellent values at this price range. The sub-$100 the De’Longhi EC155 15 bar pump espresso and cappuccino maker squeezes a lot of features in for the price.

The best rated on our list is the De’Longhi ECP3630, which is a better value than the $850 De’Longhi Magnifica S ECAM 22.110. We found the De’Longhi ECP3420 was a less compelling compromise between the other two models. We have dozens of DeLonghi espresso machine reviews. So, if you want to see more options, you can compare DeLonghi espresso machines at all price points.

DeLonghi EC155 Review

Our first DeLonghi espresso maker review is the De’Longhi EC155 15 bar pump espresso and cappuccino maker. The EC155 costs about $80 but while it is the best value, it is far from the best performer. The De’Longhi EC155 15 bar pump espresso and cappuccino make understands what it is. The DeLonghi EC155 is a cheap, manual, sometimes annoying way to get solid espresso and decent steamed milk.

It has a stainless-steel boiler and has a quick starting self-priming operation. The EC155 even has dual thermostats to control so the water and milk steam can each be at the right temperature.

The DeLonghi EC155 espresso machine has a three-way filter so you can use ground coffee, or E.S.E pods. It shows how dated this design is as the E.S.E. pods really never caught on.

Cheap, With A Few Shortcomings

The worst thing about the De’Longhi EC155 espresso maker is the steam dial. You have to remember to close is when you don’t want to use the frother. If the dial is not closed, then water sprays out from the coffee spout and from the frother. It is clunky and oddly designed and not up to their usual standards.

De’Longhi EC155 Inexpensive Pro Espresso

De’Longhi EC155 DeLonghi espresso

Where the De’Longhi EC155 15 bar pump espresso and cappuccino maker really falls down is on milk frothing and steaming. The swivel jet frother really requires you to manually control the steaming and frothing and it can be very difficult to get right consistently.

But the De’Longhi EC155 15 bar pump espresso maker just is not going to be a substitute for a trip to a Starbucks. The crema on the DeLonghi EC155 is robust but the espresso is watery compared to the other models here. But, hey, the DeLonghi EC155 is about $80. So it is cheaper than the other two, but both are worth the extra cost.

DeLonghi ECP3420 Review

Our De Longhi ECP3420 review found that you get basically as good espresso crema with the De’Longhi ECP3420 as a De’Longhi Eletta which costs 10x the money. So, it is a big upgrade in espresso from the EC155 but still not the quality and value as the slightly more costly De’Longhi ECP3630.

It makes very good espresso. The De’Longhi ECP3420 has a 15-bar pump and a stainless-steel boiler so you can make great espresso. The self-priming feature reduced the startup time. The parts are a little work to assemble and it is very manual. Moving up to a more expensive class of DeLonghi espresso machine means more automation and better milk systems.

We are not really fans of the Advanced Manual Frother. It you are huge fan of milk based drinks like lattes and cappuccinos then this manual frother really depends on the user. You need to be precise and consistent in your movements to get the best froth from the De’Longhi ECP3420. That’s a lot to mess up and most people will never get really velvety microfoam from this DeLonghi coffee machine.

The DeLonghi ECP3420 has a large, 37 ounces water tank. Make sure you remember to clean it regularly.

We like the De’Longhi ECP3420 and also found it a good value. But if you are willing to pay this much then at least consider the DeLonghi ECP3630

DeLonghi ECP3630 Review

Our final, under $200 DeLonghi espresso machine review looks at the DeLonghi ECP3630. We love this machine. It is a lot of espresso maker for well under $200.

At this price, this makes the De’Longhi ECP3630 a much better value than a De’Longhi Magnifica s ECAM 22.110. Which is why we scored it better. This is a great little machine for an espresso lover and the only one we would recommend for latte and cappuccino drinkers. The basic milk steaming technology is the same, but the wand is much better designed, more convenience and less prone to user error than the other models.

Again, the main thing missing from all three machines at this level are automation features. But, at least the ECP3630 espresso machine has much better milk steaming and frothing.

You get a lot for less than $200. However, if you wanted to stay in the budget range you can get a much more outstanding DeLonghi espresso machine for about $250 in the De’Longhi Dedica EC 680.

De Longhi ECP3630 – The Best for Milk Lovers

DeLonghi espresso maker review ECP3630

Our DeLonghi ECP3630 review rated this a “Strong Buy.” It makes excellent espresso with a nice, viscous mouth feel and the right temperature. It has a 15 bar, self-priming operation for fast warm up and excellent crema, aroma and flavor. As with the 3420, it has dual thermostats, which other manufacturers sacrifice at this price level.

Unfortunately, the De’Longhi ECP3630 doesn’t come with Prime shipping. Hopefully that changes soon.

Best DeLonghi Espresso Machine Under $200

Our DeLonghi espresso reviews concluded that for less than $200 you can get some excellent DeLonghi espresso. The De’Longhi EC155, ECP3630 and ECP3420 all exceeded our expectations for espresso quality. But, at this price range you have to prepare for some very manual, occasionally clunky operations and cleaning.

If you just want espresso, then any of these models will do well. Our under $200 DeLonghi espresso machine review found that the biggest shortcoming is for fans of milk drinks. All three models require too much from the milk handling, although the ECP3630 milk frothing was a big improvement over the others.
