Baratza Encore Conical Burr Coffee Grinder Review
For a home, a starter coffee grinder or a small office, a Baratza Encore is a fabulous choice. The Baratza Encore conical burr coffee grinder has the performance and reliability of a much more coffee grinder at a price that makes it a very good value.
Inside the Baratza Encore Grinder
The Baratza Encore looks like a small, professional grinder but it is a home coffee grinder. It has a simple but very efficient, direct-drive gear-reduction transmission. This transmission is what moves the power from the DC electric motor to the rotating cone-shaped burrs.
The Baratza Encore grinder won’t overheat. It has a built-in thermal overload cutout, and this protects the motor damage from, say overuse. The high torque DC motor runs at a moderate 550 RPM speed. This keeps it from overheating allows you to run fairly long grind cycles. This combination of gear and electronic speed reduction controls the heat, noise, and static that the Baratza Encore grinder produces.
Baratza Encore grind settings
One huge advantage of the Baratza Encore conical burr coffee grinder is its precision. It offers a very generous 40 settings with everything from very fine espresso to super coarse from 250 to 1200 microns. So, other than Turkish coffee you can have a lot of control over small adjustments to get your coffee aroma and flavor exactly where you want it.
Baratza Encore Conical Burrs
The Encore’s conical burrs are manufactured in Europe. It has 40 mm conical burrs and produces very consistent grinds. In the article, Burr vs Blade Grinders, we wrote about why conical burrs are preferable over flat burrs and blades. Consistency is very important. When you grind coffee look to see how similar in size and shape the grounds are. That shape and size of each individual ground affects how it extracts the coffee from it. The more inconsistent the ground the more unreliable the taste of your coffee will be.
Conical Burr Reliability
The burrs on the Baratza Encore Conical are very durable and will remain sharp for many years. They also have low to moderate retention of the grounds. This refers to the amount of grounds left in grinder and essentially wasted. Poor quality coffee grinders will hold a lot of grounds and they will be hard to get out. In addition to hurting the grinder performance, the stuck grounds will get stale until they fall into a later batch of coffee ground. This Having these stale grounds mixing in your coffee will have a big effect on the freshness of your coffee.
Styling and Controls
The Encore is a simple, attractive machine. The plastic body and hopper plastic feels a bit cheap, but it won’t affect the durability or performance of the machine. The motor and burrs are excellent and that is what makes a conical grinder perform and last. The on-off switch is sort of dial control and there is a single button to open the hatch. The 8-ounce coffee bean bin has a decent capacity and is easy to open and to wipe. clean. The beans fall well into the burrs and rarely get stuck.
Baratza Encore Cleaning
Baratza Encore burr grinder is easy to grind. The Burrs can be removed without tools. The plastic, coffee bean bin and coffee grounds bin are all easy to keep clean. Never submerge the Encore. You can wash the burrs and any removable parts. But, just wipe down the outer casing and bins.
Buying a Refurbished Model
We don’t recommend buying a Baratza Encore refurbished. You can get the Baratza Encore on Amazon for about $139 and that includes free shipping and returns through your Prime membership. The critical parts of any conical coffee grinder is the motor and burrs. With a Baratza Encore, the burrs and motor should last a very, very long time. But you will not be able to judge just how much wear and tear the grinder has already had. Even if it looks new on the outside, the parts that matter insider are heard to properly inspect.
Baratza Encore Accessories
If you want, you can buy an Encore hopper extender which adds another 9 ounces of bean storage to the existing 8-ounce bean hopper. Keep in mind, if you are making a couple of espressos a day, a pound of coffee could last a few weeks to a month and your beans will stay fresher in a sealed container. So, I wouldn’t put more than a week’s worth of beans in the machine at a time.
One accessory our Baratza Encore review does recommend is they do sell a replacement for the Encore’s coffee grounds bin that has a hands-free portafilter holder. This way you don’t have to hold it while the grinds fall into it. Among other things this often makes it neater and reduces the stray grounds you have to clean up.
Baratza Encore Review
Our Baratza Encore review rates this a “Strong Buy.” This conical burr grinder is a great value, durable, with great performance and consistent, reliable grinds. It is a better value than the, better but much more expensive Rancilio HSD-ROC-SD Rocky espresso coffee grinder. For home use, the Encore coffee grinder is a better choice for most people.
We also advise not buying a cheaper model than an Encore. It performs better than KRUPS GX5000 and may hold up better over time. The Encore grinder is also easier to use and will operate better over time, with more consistency and less coffee ground retention than any of the Cuisinart coffee grinder models we reviewed. Even though we gave a couple of those models “Strong Buy” recommendations as well.
