About JURA

We previously gave a detailed overview of JURA including its connection to the Swiss parent company, JURA AG, in our review of the J90 IMPRESSA. JURA is one of the most respected luxury espresso machine brands and sells in forty countries. Their reputation is excellent and for good reason.

If you like tennis, then you may have seen promotions which feature Roger Federer who is associated with the brand.

EDITORS NOTE:

JURA Z8 Updated Features

You can download an app to your Android or Apple phone called the JURA Operating Experience (J.O.E.). The app allows you to control your Z8 over a Bluetooth connection. JOE also lets you access the usage and maintenance info that you can get on the Z8’s display screen.

The Z8 will satisfy both the most discerning coffee snob and someone who expects not to have to work to get perfection. You can have a lot of control over your drinks through very precise, programmable customization. This Jura has programmable and adjustable water uses, milk and foam temperatures, brewing temperatures and coffee strengths.

But, the presets are great, so you don’t really need to do anything but fill it, press buttons and do basic cleaning and maintenance.

At this level of machine, the manufacturers tend to give you every option so there are not a lot of tradeoffs here. For example, the JURA Z8 has both touch screen and a dial control. Both of which work great.

The Z8 has all the features you would expect such as programmable auto-off timer and water hardness controls. It is superior to both the JURA WE8 and the also excellent JURA E8, which is almost half the cost. So you can’t really go wrong with either. You can adjustable coffee preset settings but also adjust the coffee strength on the fly. The Z8 does not offer a la carte bean selection. You need to go to the more expensive GIGA 6 for that.  Both models have a great “Jug of coffee” feature so you can just make a pot of coffee.

Is the JURA Z8 a Good Espresso Maker?

For 2020 The Jura Z8 Was Named an Editors Choice Winner and Took The #4 Spot on the List of 20 Best Super Automatic Espresso Machines. It scored a 94/100 and was rated “outstanding.”

Does The JURA Z8 Have A Phone App?

You can download free JURA Operating Experience (J.O.E.) for Android or Apple phone. JOE lets you control your Z8 over a Bluetooth connection but doesn’t support WiFi. JOE lets you brew drinks and also allows you to access usage and maintenance information.

What Features Does the JURA Z8 Have?

The JURA Z8 has a lot of features including programmable drink preferences, auto-off timer and water hardness controls. You can adjustable drink preset settings or adjust the coffee strength on the fly. The Z8 also has a “Jug of coffee” feature so you can just make a pot of coffee. You need to go upgrade to the GIGA 6 for a la carte bean selection.

What Kind of Controls Does the JURA Z8 Have?

The Z8 has touch screen and a dial control and also supports the JURA J.O.E downloadable phone app for Apple and Android.

What are the JURA Z8 Specifications?

Full specs are below. The JURA Z8 weighs 29.5 lbs and measures 12.6″ x 15″ x 17.7″. It makes 21 different kinds of espresso based drinks. It has the Pulse Extraction Process and IPBAS systems, an AromaG3 Grinder, Dual Thermoblock and the JURA Fine Foam System.

Increased Capacity & Lower Maintenance

Its various capacities tend to be larger than other models. For example, it has an 86-ounce water tank. A JURA Z8 can brew two drinks at once. The Z8 holds 10 ounces of beans and 20 pucks of spent coffee grounds which is more than most other home machines.

The Z8’s spouts adjust vertically quite a bit so it can handle many types of containers. You can adjust the distance between the two coffee spouts which is a great feature you see on higher end machines.

The water tank has a nice lever to remove the water tank from the side instead of the back, which is what you want.

It is a larger machine than many so it will work better in larger kitchens. It does fit under standard height cabinets.

Overall this is a gorgeous machine with great engineering and design and high standards in materials and constriction. This makes it worthy of its high price tag.

Review Summary

Coffee Insider 2020 Editors Choice Award
JURA Z8 2020 Editors Choice Winner

For our 2020 JURA Z8 review we feel that this machine feels nearly perfect overall. However, the touchscreen isn’t as intuitive to learn as you may expect. Perhaps JURA assumes anyone willing to invest this kind of money will invest a few extra minutes into learning the screens.

Finally, lots of features do mean there is a little more to learn although the JURA Z8 has some very clear, push button operation so you will figure it out quickly.

Z8 Brewing Features

The JURA Z8 makes fantastic, consistently near perfect coffee with consistently near perfect foam. It always produces a fantastic nice thick crema.

The Z8 has the Pulse Extraction Process (P.E.P). This expresses the grinds in short but rapid bursts which produces better tasting espresso. The unit holds between 5g and 16g of grinds which gives you good range of coffee strength for different preferences and types of drinks.

It also sports the JURA Intelligent Pre-Brew Aroma System (I.P.B.A.S.) and a thermoblock heating system which heats water when you need it instead of more slowly heating a reservoir of water. It also allows you to make multiple drinks with less wait time between.

Grinding

The Z8 comes with their AromaG3 grinder. This system purports to have perfected the speed and angles of the grind to produce better grounds and therefore better tasting coffee. We can’t really judge the veracity of this claim, but the product is excellent so why not.

Microfoam

The Z8 makes consistently smooth, frothy and silky microfoam that is perfect every time. It sports their “fine foam” technology and an HP3 milk system which can be replaced if it ever wears out.

The GIGA 6 does have some additional milking options including cortado and 2X milk or flat white

Z8 Maintenance & Cleaning

You don’t need to do a lot of maintenance with the Z8. It has a large reservoir and holds 10 ounces of beans and 20 pucks of grounds.

The Z8 cleaning is relatively easy. You can get tablets from them to do a cleaning cycle once a day or week depending upon use and it is really easy. It also does have an automatic milk cleaning cycle and integrated rinsing, cleaning and descaling program. The status displays for maintenance tasks are clear and can also be accessed on your phone using the JOE app that is available for free download.

2020 Updated JURA Z8 Recommendation & Buyer’s Guide

In our 2020 JURA Buyer’s Guide we directly compare the GIGA 6 vs the Z8 vs the J90 IMPRESSA. The Z8 won our recommendation and 2020 Editors Choice award.

Our 2020 JURA Z8 review ends with a clear ‘buy’ recommendation. This is a nearly perfect machine. If you are thinking about getting one go ahead. You won’t regret it. It is difficult to give a definitive recommendation over choosing between the JURA Z8 the GIGA 6 because it really depends on how much weight you want to put on value vs. simply willing to pay the most for the best.

2020 JURA Z8 Review and comparison to the JURA GIGA 6

Both are top of the line, luxury level home espresso makers that really deserve to be in the finest homes in the world. Frankly they are better than many commercial machines and certainly are better looking and simpler to use.

We recommend buying direct from the JURA store on Amazon. The JURA Z8 can be had at a discount for around $3845 and there is no argument to pay a few hundred dollars more through a reseller.

GIGA 6 costs closer to $6000. You do get more features for that price difference, but you need to decide for yourself how much you are considering value vs. overall quality.
